Signature Event Rental a new PCCC sponsor

The Prairie Capital Convention Center’s board Tuesday approved a letter of intent to have a Springfield company become the sponsor of the building’s south terrace for a year for $15,000.

Signature Event Rental, 3033 Clear Lake Avenue, organizes events including weddings, corporate gatherings and farm shows, and rents items including tents and the materials for booths used at some trade shows at the convention center.

“We are a full-service event and tent rental company,” Josh Sonneborn, owner of the company, said later Tuesday.

“We’re really excited about what’s going on at the P-triple-C,” he said, and the company hopes “to be more a part of it as we move forward.”

Tuesday’s vote paved the way for development of a final contract. The letter states that the contract would include the company being title sponsor of the south terrace, which is on the mezzanine level. The letter also calls for signage including the name of the firm that would be facing west from terrace windows – by the building’s southwest entrance.

The company would also get a sign in the main hall, use of the terrace for two events and can use the area to display rental offerings when it isn’t needed, and four tickets to main hall and the outdoor Bank of Springfield Plaza events.

The south terrace is along the mezzanine that has already been named for Green Family Stores, the car dealerships that struck an earlier sponsorship deal. There is already a “Green Family Stores Mezzanine” sign that faces south from terrace windows.

Bryce Benton, a member of the board, said at Tuesday’s meeting that he’s had “a lot of negative feedback” about that Green sign, which is visible from the street. He said what he’s heard is “It makes it look cheap.”

Brian Oaks, general manager of the building, said he’s heard good things about the Green sponsorship, with signage inside the building making what had been bare concrete “more dressed up.”

“The inside’s not as much of an issue with me,” Benton said.

The Green Family Stores are paying $55,000 a year for their sponsorship, which includes use of the building for a car sale during the Illinois State Fair.

Benton voted for the Green agreement, but said after the meeting, “I just might think about reworking the exterior signage next time.”

“I think it’s good to have the investment in the convention center, and it’s dollars that are coming into the community, ultimately,” he said.

Rachael Buraski, marketing director for Green Family Stores, said she thinks the signage looks nice.

“It’s tasteful and it’s not too big,” she said.

“Everything was done with the approval of the board” who saw pictures of the proposed signage, Buraski added, “so I don’t know why there’s an issue.”

“We’re still happy to be partners with the convention center, and I’m happy that they’re getting more sponsorships – I think that’s great,” Buraski said.

Shawn Mayernick, director of business partnerships for the center, said at the meeting that the board has approved more than $325,000 in sponsorships, adding to the bottom line. He thanked board members, as well as the businesses that “have stepped up to say that our convention center is a valuable resource to our community.”

The board approves commissions for Mayernick and Oaks for some of the sponsorships.
